So you’re getting married? Congratulations! Committing to spend your life with someone is a big deal and most people want to celebrate in style. This means that wedding planning often involves a lot of decision making. Probably more than you have ever had to do before. Which table settings? What cake? Who will make speeches? How should you register for gifts?

One decision that certainly needs some time and attention is how to do your wedding hair. Along with dress, shoes, accessories and make-up, wedding hair is an important decision and one over which to take your time! To help you decide what look is right for you on your big day here is our step by step guide to choosing the perfect wedding hairstyle.

Step 1: Ask friends for recommendations

Most people getting married will know others who have done so already and these people are a great (and often underused) resource for help and advice. Speak to friends who have been brides in the past few years to find out which hairstyle they chose, whether they liked it and what they would do differently now.

Step 2: Look for images that appeal

Another great resource is pictures. By looking at a wide range of photographs and images you will be able to pick out those hairstyles that might suit you. Look in bridal magazines and general fashion publications as well as online. You can start with a simple image search for wedding hair and use image sharing social media sites that contain lots of inspiration. When searching for images don’t limit yourself to traditional styles. Recent trends for French and Dutch braid hairstyles have suited many a long-haired bride.

Step 3: Find a trusted professional

Once you have some looks which you think might suit, find yourself a trusted and skilled hair professional. Again, asking friends for recommendations is a good place to start. Make sure to find someone who has done lots of wedding hair packages before and really knows what they are talking about. Show them the images you like and get their advice on whether it might suit.

Step 4: Do some trials

This is the fun part! Set aside an evening at least a month before your wedding day and ask your hair stylist to try out a few different looks. It’s only by seeing them on you that you’ll be able to decide whether that look is what you want. If possible, get your stylist to do your preferred hair do at the end of the session and leave it in for a few hours. It’s important to check that the style you’ve chosen will stay in place throughout your big day.

Once you’ve found your preferred style you’ll know it. It’s the one that makes you feel like a million dollars! Whether that’s a traditional up-do or a trendy Dutch braid it’ll definitely be worth the effort.
